In the past decade or so, Disney has apparently been trying to get with the times--which means totally reinventing what it means to be a princess. Or does it? Today, I take a look at how Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind redefined princess before Rapunzel, before Anna and Elsa, before Moana--and what she has to teach us. • • FOOTNOTES: • 05:34: There is, of course, an incredible amount of violence in Nausicaa; however, the film does not revel in especially violent pieces of spectacle, nor is the violence that is presented unnecessary or excessive. So I don't see it as a violent film. • 06:37: As well as my own experience with gender role expectations, I'm extrapolating from the 2011 article Gender Role Portrayal and the Disney Princess (England, Descartes, et. al.) wherein descriptors such as nurturing ( to care for and encourage the growth or development of, to foster ) and sensitive ( perception, knowledge, connected with...distinguished as a form of empathy ) were coded as feminine. • 07:56: This second argument pervades Disney narratives--narratives in general, actually. It's dramatically satisfying to see characters fight in a final showdown, and we've come to expect it. So not only is media feeding us this argument of to not fight is to not choose, our inbuilt sense of story reinforces this--we're anticipating the fight, and might feel cheated if we don't get it. • 12:48: Getting along with animals is a chief princess characteristic, but Nausicaa's established knowledge of the world around her helps ground it in reality. That is, her incredible connection with animals is not a result of some innate princess nature, but rather is a logical extension of Nausicaa's experience and familiarity with the jungle. • 16:15: Kushana is the commander of the army and makes a vague reference to others in power, but in the Valley, she occupies a position clearly identical to Nausicaa's. • EnzotheOtaku's video: • The Importance of Warriors of the Wind.
